Physalis peruviana. A tender perennial, bearing yellow flowers with a brown centre followed by very decorative bright orange yellow fruits contained within a delicate papery pod. These pods are often used as a garnish for desserts in restaurants.The fruits have a lovely sweet flavour, and can be eaten raw or used to make jams and pies.
Cape gooseberries are a tender perennial and will usually survive the winter in an unheated greenhouse in milder parts of the country, needing a bit more heat in colder areas.
