Corylus avellana contorta. This is the rare red-leaved form of the contorted hazel. A small tree or large shrub with contorted branches that look particularly interesting in winter when they are bare of leaves. In early spring long yellow catkins are produced on the bare branches, followed by bright red leaves in summer and red nuts in autumn. Sun or part shade. Will tolerate chalky soil. If left un-pruned the tree will grow to approx 2.5 metres height and spread.
