Cyphomandra betacea (Solanum betacea) , Fruit is egg shaped & upto 10cm long, native to S. America, growing upto 3000 m altitude. Skin is thin & can be red to purple or golden to amber. The bitter skin is not normally eaten, yet its flesh is tangy & mildly sweet, (Like kiwifruit or passion fruit). Seeds in the centre are also edible. With its sweet/tart taste, it’s often eaten out of hand & great for salads, stews, jams, jellies, & juices. Best ripe when soft. Fast growing small shrub to 6/7 ft, with a single upright trunk, lasting 7 to 8 yrs. large leaf & pinkish fragrant flower.
