Pumpkin , Rouge vif d’Etampes 'Potiron' (Big Red Cooker)

Cucurbita maxima, (aka Red Etampes) or Cinderella's pumpkin, Circa 1810s France - translates to "vivid red." A French heirloom variety featuring a striking orangey-red hue with prominent deep ribs & flattened shape resembling a red cheese wheel. Commonly referred to as the "Cinderella pumpkin" due to its large, ribbed, bright orange-red fruit reminiscent of a fairytale carriage, it is valued for both its ornamental appeal & culinary versatility. Known for high yields & sweet flavour, this variety is ideal for traditional pumpkin pies, as well as soups & roasting. It was widely available in 19th-century Parisian markets & has been noted as the type cultivated by the Pilgrims & served at the second Thanksgiving dinner.   SOWING - (120 days) A warm spot, well-drained & fertile soil with plenty of composted organic matter & mulch to conserve moisture; Sow insitu after the threat of frost has passed. Sow one inch deep in hills or rows spaced twenty-four to thirty inches apart, Harvest late Autumn near the first frosts.
