Aloysia citriodora. This deciduous perennial shrub, native to South America, is similar in many ways to Lemon Verbena, but this variety smells of fresh spearmint and seems to be much more hardy. Small white flowers are produced in late spring/summer. The leaves give off a delightful spearmint scent which becomes more prominent when the leaves are rubbed or crushed. Light well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Maximum height up to 2 metres.
Use: as you would lemon verbena - boiled to make a syrup to use in baking and ice-creams, in cocktails or as a tea/tisane
