This species originated in China in about 500 BC. A perennial herbaceous onion, it's very similar in taste and odour to the related garden onion, however when grown in a bunch it will produce bulbs like a shallot or spring onion, but also hollow leaves and scapes like chives. Its globe-like heads of yellowish-white flowers are also attractive, especially to pollinating insects. Priced for: a 1 litre pot

Use: The bulbs are a good substitute when spring onions or shallot are out of season, and the scapes are used in the same way as chives
