A deciduous tree, originating from the Mediterranean, that has been used for medicinal and culinary purposes for at least 2,500 years. Upright panicles of lavender-coloured flowers are borne in autumn. Height up to 2.5 metres. Full sun, any soil. Hardy to -10C
Use: the berries can be dried and used as a substitute for pepper. They are used in various spice blends, including the Moroccan 'ras el hanout'. The leaves can be used as a seasoning.
