This is a fan-trained specimen, ideal for training against a wall or forming a natural division in the garden.

Pyrus communis. This unusual and striking variety was named after the striped breeches worn by the Swiss Guard at the Vatican and may have been around for at least 400 years. As early as the 17th century, a French pomologist mentioned Swiss pears with red, green and yellow stripes which could be eaten until January. A dessert pear with a fine flavour. Growth is vigorous, particularly in the early years, and the variety is best suited to south or south-west facing positions. Harvest: Mid-October, store until the end of the year.
