Mespilus germanica. An ornamental flowering tree closely related to the pear, with pretty blossom and good autumn colour. When ripe the fruit is hard and green. They are picked at this stage, but aren’t edible until half rotten or ‘bletted’ by storing in a cool dark place, when they turn brown and soft and develop an aromatic flavour.
