Lactuca sativa var capitata, (circa 1952 USA) This original non-heading (Looseleaf) Lettuce was introduced in 1952 alongside its red counterpart, which received the "All-America Selection®" award that same year. The variety is characterised by crisp & tender leaves with a sweet flavour. Its close-set, deep-lobed, brilliant green foliage is recognised for maintaining sweetness & tenderness, remaining crisp & palatable without developing bitterness even in hot weather, and is slow to bolt. The plant matures fully in approx 45 days, reaching a height of 8 to 10 ins, and is suitable for both container and open ground cultivation. SOWING - Sow in a unheated greenhouse or protected area outside, all thru the year making succession plantings every 1-2 weeks to ensure a constant harvest. Always harvest lettuce very early in the morning, Maturity 68 days Seed Depth: sow thinly and just lightly covered (5 to 10 days to emerge) Note: Lettuce will not germinate at high temperatures.
