Cucurbita maxima, Big, Bold, Red, Warty and ever so Sweet, 90 to 100 days, Summer pumpkin / Early winter squash (Its treated & eaten as either), was originally known as ‘Punkin Victor’ in USA by James J.H. Gregory in 1897, but modern breeders wanted a more colourful name for its reintroduction in the early 2000’s from the U.S. Seed Bank.  Use in soups, stews, roasted, baked with or in any other way you would use a pumpkin, but it is actually a Hubbard type squash. The skin starts out a smooth & pale, subdued yellow-orange & kinda boring looking. BUT, as it matures, its turns a deep orange red & the bumpy skin appears (like warts), which is sugar pushing thru (more bumps, more sweet). Harvest late autumn & keep into early winter.  The fine-grained inner flesh is orange, dense & firm with a string-less texture., Seed Count Approx - 6 avg

SOWING - Squash will not germinate in cold soil & needs a warm spot, well-drained & fertile soil with plenty of composted organic matter to conserve moisture;. Planting should be delayed until soil has warmed (can be started in greenhouse mid March onward, plant out end Mayish),  Sow directly insitu after threat of frost has passed. Sow one inch deep in hills or rows spaced 24 to 36 in apart , Harvest just before frosts, when the stems dry & turn brown.
