Mountain Pepper or Tasmannia. A compact shrub with lanceolate foliage and contrasting red stems. Creamy-white flowers in spring are followed by red berries, ripening to black in autumn. Height up to 1 metre. Priced for: 2 litre pot
Use: The plant is aromatic, and both leaves and berries are used as a sweet-peppery spice. It can be added to curries, cheese and alcoholic beverages, and is used in Japan to flavour wasabi.
