Cynara scolymus - This variety, of Italian origin, is a handsome plant to look at, with silverish-green leaves, and purple globe-like buds. At 1.5 metres tall it is shorter than other varieties, and will mature slightly later than the green types, but is said to have an arguably finer flavour. If left to flower, it is a huge attraction for bees. Globe artichokes need to be planted where they will stay, and require a sunny site with reliable moisture. They are tolerant of salty air and will grow quite happily near the sea. Priced for a 1 litre pot
