In the Grimm brothers' tale, rampion is the vegetable in the witch's garden that tempts Rapunzel's mother. A biennial grown for its sweet edible roots that grow up to 25cm long and can be eaten raw or cooked. It also has edible young leaves and shoots. Bees like the pretty blue flowers. Prefers a moist soil in sun or part shade. Mentioned in print in the 1800's but probably eaten as far back as Medieval times. Height to 1 metre. Priced for a 9 cm pot
Use: The leaves can be used in salads and the roots cooked and added to soups and stews
