Native to China and Korea. An impressive perennial species with robust hairy stems, bearing large green leaves, followed by long racemes of pink flowers in summer. These are followed by round purple-black fruit in late summer/autumn. Best in well-drained soil in semi shade, though it will tolerate full sun. Very architectural in structure, growing to 2 metres when established. Very hardy. Deciduous. Priced for a 1.5 litre pot
Use: The shoots, usually blanched, are crisp and tender with a lemony flavour. Add to salads, soups and stews
