Mespilus germanica. Closely related to the pear, this medlar is very ornamental with pretty blossom and good autumn colour. The edible fruits are ready to pick in the autumn when they are hard and green, but aren’t edible until half rotten or ‘bletted’ by storing in a cool dark place, when they turn brown and soft and develop an aromatic flavour. Once bletted, they can be eaten raw. Hardy and disease resistant. Self Fertile.
