Mespilus germanica. White flowers in May followed by slightly pear-shaped quite large fruit. Good flavour. Nice autumn colour too. They are picked at this stage, but aren’t edible until half rotten or ‘bletted’ by storing in a cool dark place, when they turn brown and soft and develop an aromatic flavour. Once bletted, they can be eaten raw Pick late October and use November/December when the fruit has softened. The tree is less vigorous than other varieties making it good where space is restricted. Self-fertile. Priced for a maiden tree on Quince A rootstock (ideal for bush trees)
