Pyrus communis. Dessert variety introduced by Thomas Rivers in 1894. Most widely grown pear in Britain. Can be cropped and stored before ripe and is often sold under-ripe, but when ripe it has an excellent flavour. Pick at the end of September, store until November. Self-fertile.
