Pisum sativum. A drying pea with a rich history! These unique brown 'nutty' peas, with around 9.5g of protein per 100g, match lentils as among the highest protein pulses, and can be used in place of chickpeas in many dishes. Traditionally eaten in Northern England on the Sunday before Palm Sunday, known there as Carlin Sunday, and said to commemorate the arrival of a shipload of peas in besieged Newcastle in 1644 during the English Civil War, saving many from starvation. Also popular with pigeon fanciers who feed Carlins to their birds. Seed count approx 50
