Oenothera biennis, (17th century), originally "King's cure-all" or German Rampion, & a well-known herb for treating most ailments, The root is the only part used & during the first year, the nutty-flavoured roots can be harvested & boiled. The flowers make an especially lovely salad garnish, remaining open from evening to early morning, but will remain open longer on cloudy days. They have a mild lemony scent, & bloom from mid-summer to fall on mature plants. The seeds are used to produce evening primrose oil & are also a favourite of goldfinches. Hardy Biennial (HT: 2 to 3 ft), Seed Count Approx - 800+ avg SOWING - Prefers full sun & well-drained soil, but most growing conditions are acceptable.
