C. pepo L Crown Prince Type - Heirloom, A rare European heirloom, This is for those that want an Heirloom ‘Crown Prince’ squat jack o' lantern type, but not an F1. Discovered in Budapest by agriculturist Philippe Desbrosses & originally answered to “Nagydobosy sütotok”, it was given an easier name ‘Hungarian blue’, for obvious reasons & named after its unique very pale blue-grey to turquoise outside colouring, However, the inside reveals a more traditional orange-yellow flesh, very sweet, dense, & versatile, to be used in a variety of recipes both sweet & savoury. Medium fruit type with fruits that weigh about 6kg, with vigorous growth and stores well. Plants are climbing/trailing., Seed Count Approx - 6 avg SOWING - Squash will not germinate in cold soil & needs a warm spot, well-drained & fertile soil with plenty of composted organic matter to conserve moisture;. Planting should be delayed until the soil has warmed (can be started in greenhouse mid-March onward, plant out end Mayish), Sow directly insitu after the threat of frost has passed. Sow one inch deep in hills or rows spaced 24 to 36 in apart, Harvest just before frosts when the stems dry & turn brown.
