Alcea rosea, Old-Fashioned Black Flowered Perennial, Hollyhocks, long treasured in European gardens since the 1400s after their arrival from the Middle East, were firmly established in English cottage plots by the 1500s.   SOWING - Sow any time of the year when ground can be cultivated for flowers the 2nd yr. For flowers 1st yrs, start indoors 8 wks before the last frost. Just press seeds into soil, do not cover. Seeds require light to germinate.Singles are more resistant to Hollyhock Rust than its double blooming cousins & also rabbit resistant. (will self seed reliably) Plant outside after last frost
