Okra - 'Lady's Fingers' , Red Burgundy (striking burgundy-red pods)

Abelmoschus esculentus, Open Pollinated - Aka: Gumbo in USA, A most handsome & productive variety, bearing elegant cream-yellow flowers followed by striking burgundy-red pods. Plants reach 2–3 ft in height & produce abundant 2–5 in fruits, best harvested young & frequently to encourage continued cropping. The tender pods may be boiled, fried, roasted or added to stews, curries & traditional gumbo. Bred by Leon Robbins of Clemson University & introduced in 1983, it was honoured as an All-America Selections winner in 1988. Thriving in warmth & sunshine, it performs especially well in a greenhouse or sheltered position. Although the pods lose their red colouring during cooking & turn green, they retain the fine flavour & texture for which okra is so highly prized,, Seed Count Approx - 20 avg 

  SOWING -  Seeds can be hard to germinate. To help them along, either gently crack the outer coating with nail clippers or soak them in water overnight. Germination takes place in 8 to12 days. Space seeds 2 inches (5 cm.) apart in rich soil & about half an inch (2 cm.) deep. Transplant seedlings when all chance of frost is gone & soil is warm, Plant the new plants 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm.) apart. Pods should form in 55 to 60 days.
